In 1979, the graduates of the MBA program at Harvard were asked if they had
written goals for the future and made plans to accomplish them. Only 3% of
the graduates had written goals and plans, 13% had goals, but they were not in
writing. The final 84% had no specific goals at all, aside from getting out of
school and enjoying the summer. In 1989 the researchers interviewed the members
of that class again. They found the 13% who had goals that were not in writing
were earning on average twice as much as the 84% of the students which had no
goals at all.
But most surprisingly they found that the 3% of graduates who
had clear, written goals when they left Harvard were earning, on
average, 10 times as much as the other 97% of the graduates altogether.
The only difference between the groups was the clarity of the goals they
had for themselves when they graduated.

The Elephant's Paradigm...
Here is a story
about the great circus elephant standing peacefully while chained to
a small peg. For some reason the giant elephant- which can of course
easily step away and uproot the peg almost without noticing- for
some reason, chooses to remain chained to it.
Why does the
elephant choose to stay chained to the peg?
One of the reasons
may lie in the elephant's past…
The tiny elephant
was chained to the peg as a baby, and for hours and days he pulled
and pulled and tried with all his might to uproot it.
As the years went
by he came to terms with the peg being stronger than him, and with
the belief that he was doomed to continue being chained to it by
shackles.
Now, in his
adulthood, a huge elephant weighing several tons, has given up trying long ago, and it is clear to him
that he must live his life next to the peg.
It is interesting
to wonder, what pegs we are chained to in OUR lives. How many of
them do we even recognize? And the most intriguing question of all-
what must happen for us to uproot old pegs and dare to set out on
the road to where it is we want to go….
